Dry needling is gebaseerd op Westerse anatomische en neurofysiologische principes (en dus niet op de Oosterse geneeskunde, zoals bij de acupunctuur). Dry needling werkt op specifieke punten, zogenaamde \u2018triggerpoints\u2019. Dat zijn spierverhardingen, die naast de lokale drukpijn, ook vaak pijn \u2018op afstand\u2019 veroorzaken. De fysiotherapeut zoekt naar deze plaatsen, omdat ze vaak de hoofdoorzaak zijn van de klachten.
